Architecture Block Diagram

The scan head and decoding are physically and logically isolated from the ap-
plication software. A separate interface board accepts both raw fixed beam
signals and serial data from scanners with embedded decoding. The interface
board handles code integrity locally, and passes back either a valid read trans-
lated into a standard functional protocol, or an error code representing the
problem with the read (see figure below).

Anticipated Read Failure Rate

A read failure is defined as a decode of the read that does not match the ac-
tual intended code. The design goal is a failure rate of better than 1 in 5000
items. When parity is used, the failure rate shall not exceed 1 in 1,000,000
A read rate of better than 99.999% is required on a good quality print where
the code includes all integrity features.
