Chapter 4
Limitations with VGA support
Digital UNIX uses VGA for its console when the X Window
System is not running. The Md4/PCI board also supports
VGA. To support VGA with the Md4/PCI board, you must
enable VGA, as described in "Supporting VGA with the
Md4/PCI board" on page 125, and install the board in a
64-bit slot.
The Digital 500au workstation does not support the
Md4/PCI board's VGA in the 32-bit slots, so you must
have a separate VGA-capable board in one of the 64-bit
slots if you want VGA console booting and you are install-
ing the Md4/PCI board in a 32-bit slot
If you are using the Digital display board for your VGA
console, make sure your Md4/PCI board has been config-
ured to disable VGA support. See "To disable VGA mode"
on page 128 for more information about disabling VGA on
the Md4/PCI board.
Attaching an ASCII terminal
As an alternative to leaving an extra display board in one
of the 64-bit slots for console boot messages, you can attach
a standard ASCII terminal (for example, VT100) to your
Digital Personal Workstation. Please follow the instruc-
tions in your system manual on how to connect a console
terminal.
