GLOSSARY
Application Software Programs designed for a
specific use (i.e., Word Processing) and distributed
on floppy disks.
Central Processing Unit (CPU) An 8086 chip
located on your processor board. The CPU is the
microprocessor
which
controls
all
computer
operations.
Co-Processor An 8087 chip which can be added to
your system to expand the arithmetic functions of
your CPU.
Command An instruction to the computer which
is entered from the keyboard.
Cursor A blinking underline or rectangle which
indicates where the next entry from the keyboard
will appear on the screen.
Data Information used by the computer.
Diagnostics A series of tests used to determine
whether the different parts of the computer are
functioning correctly.
Directory A list of the files found on a floppy disk
or hard disk.
FloP.PY Disk A flexible magnetic storage medium
similar in looks and operation to a phonograph
record.
Format The process whereby a disk is prepared for
use by the computer.
Function Keys
Special keys which can be
programmed to carry specific instructions to the
computer.
Hard Disk A permanent storage device which
allows for rapid retrieval of information and is
capable of holding large quantities of data.
