1. Fuel Line Inspection
Check fuel flow to carburetor.
Does fuel reach the carburetor?
– Faulty fuel system.
NO
– GO TO STEP 2.
YES
2. Spark Plug Inspection
Remove and inspect the spark plug.
Is the spark plug wet?
– • Flooded carburetor
YES
• Throttle valve open
• Dirty air cleaner
• Improperly adjusted pilot screw
NO
– GO TO STEP 3.
3. Spark Test
Perform spark test.
Is there weak or no spark?
– • Faulty spark plug
YES
• Loose or disconnected ignition system wires
• Broken or shorted spark plug wire
• Faulty ignition coil
• Faulty ignition pulse generator
• Faulty ignition switch
• Faulty CDI
• Faulty regulator, rectifier Assembly
• Shorted battery wire
– GO TO STEP 4.
NO
4. Engine Starting Condition
Start by following normal procedure.
Does the engine start then stops?
– • Improper choke operation
YES
• Incorrectly adjusted carburetor
• Leaking carburetor insulator
• Improper ignition timing (Faulty CDI or ignition pulse generator)
• Contaminated fuel
– GO TO STEP 5.
NO
5. Cylinder Compression Inspection
Test cylinder compression.
Is the compression low?
– • Valve clearance too small
YES
• Valve stuck open
• Worn cylinder and piston rings
• Leaking/damaged cylinder head gasket
• Seized valve
• Improper valve timing
• Loose spark plug
• Carbon deposition on valves
