Infrastructure Network Type
For this type of network, the channel is set to
.
automatic
Where several APs have the same SSID, so that a client can roam from
one to the other, you need to specify a Default Access Point (DAP) to which
the client automatically connects whenever possible.
If each AP has a unique SSID, you do not need to specify a DAP.
Ad Hoc Network Type
Ad Hoc networking is designed as a peer-to-peer communication mode.
Clients must use the same SSID as the AP they want to connect to for
communication to be possible. The client that starts an Ad Hoc session
sets a "communicating" channel. Other clients that want to communicate
with this first client are automatically tuned to match the first client's
channel. The channel set in their own configurations is ignored unless it
matches.
WEP Security
WEP security allows the AP to authenticate the client before
communication takes place. Authentication is when the AP checks that
the client is authorized to access the network. Communication is when
the two exchange data.
The WEP encryption key can be either 40 bits (5 pairs of hexadecimal
digits) or 128 bits (13 pairs of hexadecimal digits). These keys can take
any hex value and are not case sensitive. They must match exactly
between the access point and the clients.
Open Authentication and Shared Key Authentication are the two
authentication modes. The AP and client authentication modes must
match for any communication to take place.
In Open Authentication mode, the AP verifies the client identity regardless
of the WEP key, thus the client and the AP always associate.
Communication takes place only if the WEP keys of the client and the AP
match.
In Shared Key Authentication, the WEP keys of the AP and the client must
match for the AP to verify and communicate with the client.
