5–9. Hammer Tip Height (Protrusion) Adjustment (Figure 5–7)
NOTE: Hammer tips should protrude through the hammer bank cover between
0.001 and 0.005 inch. Tip protrusion less than 0.001 inch is "negative protru-
sion." Protrusion more than 0.005 inch is excessive protrusion.
1.
Place ribbon drive in service position per paragraph 3–4c.4. (It is not necessary to remove
cables.)
2.
Place hammer bank in service position per paragraph 3–4c.5, observing the precautions appro-
priate to the type of bearing block.
3.
Lift the ribbon mask from the hammer bank cover and place a 0.005 inch feeler gauge blade on
the cover, next to the hammer tips.
4.
Slide the blade along the full length of the hammer bank; the blade should touch all hammer tips
as it travels.
NOTE: If the blade fails to touch some hammer tips, there is negative protrusion
at those tips.
5.
Slide another feeler gauge blade over the top surface of the 0.005 inch blade. There should be no
contact between the sliding blade and the hammer tips along any portion of the hammer bank.
NOTE: If the blade touches some hammer tips, there is excessive protrusion of
those tips.
6.
If all tips are within 0.001 and 0.005 inch tolerances, go to step 9. If there is negative protrusion,
go to step 7. If there is excessive protrusion, go to step 8.
7.
If there is negative protrusion, remove the hammer bank cover assembly and determine if a stain-
less steel strip is on the surface nearest the hammer bank.
a.
If there is a stainless steel strip, remove and reinstall the assembly. Test again for tip pro-
trusion.
b.
If there is no stainless steel strip, replace the shuttle assembly per paragraph 5–24.
8.
If there is excessive protrusion, remove the hammer bank cover assembly and install a stainless
steel strip (P/N 105639–001) on the hammer bank cover surface closest to the hammer bank. In-
stall the strip in front of the row of holes.
9.
Return hammer bank to operating position per paragraph 3–4c.8.
10. Return ribbon drive to operating position per paragraph 3–4c.9.
