ILMI Autoconfiguration Examples
Port 2 of the ANIM-21/3 is connected to another ATM Switch. In this example, the other
switch is a Enterasys Systems SmartSwitch 2500. Since both of these switches support the
latest version of PNNI (1.0), they have auto-negotiated to use this Signalling stack. The "H"
indicates that the SmartSwitch 2500 has a higher PNNI Node ID than the SmartSwitch 9500.
Port 3 of the ANIM-21/3 is connected to a third party ATM Switch that supports IISP 3.1. To
ensure vendor interoperability, the switches have negotiated to use IISP 3.1. To determine
which device will support the Network and User sides of the connection, ILMI compares the
System IDs of both devices. The device with lower ID, is configured to support the User side
of the connection. In this example, the third party ATM switch has been autoconfigured to be
the User side of the connection, as it has the lower system ID. The 9A686-04 is maintaining
the Network side of the connection.
Example 2
In this example, the ANIM installed in slot 2 of the 9A686-04 is an ANIM-21/3. This ANIM
provides 3 OC-3 (155 Mbps) switched ports that use Multimode fiber optic cabling. Port one
is connected to an Ethernet to ATM bridge. Ports 2 and 3 are connected to other ATM
switches.
The Ethernet to ATM LEC provides Ethernet users with access to the ATM backbone that the
SmartSwitch 9500 is a part of. In this example, the bridge is a third party shared Ethernet hub
with an ATM uplink device. The ATM uplink device is capable of only using UNI 3.0
Signalling. Port 1 of this ANIM has, therefore, set this port to use the UNI 3.0 Signalling
stack. If, in the future, this product is upgraded to an ATM uplink that is capable of using a
higher version of UNI, this ANIM port will automatically conform to the ATM uplink device's
request. The third party hub is an ATM Access device, therefore it is maintaining the UNI 3.0
User side connection and the 9A686-04 is maintaining the Network side.
Port 2 of this ANIM is connected to a third party ATM switch that has been configured to use
PNNI 1.0 for Signalling. Since both devices are ATM switches, this a symmetric PNNI 1.0
Network connection. The "H" and "L" indicate which device has the higher PNNI Node ID.
Port 3 of the ANIM-21/3 is connected to a third party ATM Switch. The third party switch has
requested to use the highest version of IISP it knows, which is 3.0. The 9A686-04 has
complied with this request, and set the Signalling Stack to IISP 3.0. To determine which
device will support the Network and User sides of the connection, ILMI compares the System
IDs of both devices. The device with lower ID, is configured to support the User side of the
connection. In this example, the third party ATM switch has been autoconfigured to be the
User side of the connection, as it has the lower system ID. The 9A686-04 is maintaining the
Network side of the connection.
