ILMI 4.0 AND THE SMARTSWITCH 9500 SYSTEM
This chapter provides an overview of how the SmartSwitch 9500 system uses ILMI 4.0 to
provide a flexible, multi-protocol ATM switch. The auto-configuration features of ILMI 4.0
allow the SmartSwitch 9500 to support all standard ATM Signalling and Routing protocols on
both front panel and backplane interfaces on an interface by interface basis. This chapter also
describes how minimum and maximum values may be set to limit the VPI and VCI values that
ILMI will assign to connection requests.
For additional information on ILMI, refer to the ATM Forum's ILMI 4.0 Specification.

SmartSwitch modules, which are referred to as the "9A686-04".

ILMI AUTOCONFIGURATION EXAMPLES
Figure 3-1
provides five examples that display how each 9A686-04 in the SmartSwitch 9500
system can support a variety of different Signalling protocols per front panel and backplane
interface. Depending on the configuration of the device to which it is attached, the 9A686-04
adjusts its Signalling stack to meet the requirements of the other device. If the other device is
upgraded, and requires a new Signalling stack, the individual 9A686-04 interface will
automatically change its Signalling stack to the requested protocol. Refer to the following
sections for brief descriptions of the five examples provided in
9A656-04/9A686-04 Configuration Guide
