Designing anti-virus domains

The main window of the Management Console program consists of the
anti-virus domain view in the left pane and several other possible views in the
right pane, each of which is viewable depending on the item selected in the left
pane.
An anti-virus domain is different from a Microsoft network domain. A
Microsoft network domain has security policies at logon. An anti-virus
domain has anti-virus policies for distributing anti-virus software and for
virus alerts.
The anti-virus domain may span over several sites; machines may be on
different networks in different cities. You can create one anti-virus domain, or
have separate anti-virus domains for each site.
A large anti-virus domain can make configuration and maintenance of
member machines difficult, and if it spans WAN links, it can increase network
traffic and usage charges. If you split large anti-virus domains into smaller
ones, you must assign one Windows NT server as the Management Server in
each anti-virus domain.
If you have Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows for
Workgroups 3.11 machines in the same anti-virus domain, they must all run a
protocol in common with the Management Server.
