Management Console
Management Server
Master Repository
member machines
Running on Windows NT only, the Management Console
controls the configuration and installation of anti-virus
components on machines in the anti-virus domain. It
does not need to run on the Management Server because
it does not need to run all the time.
You can run the Management Console on a local
machine and/or on a server, letting you run it from
different machines; however, only one machine may run
the software at any one time.
The Management Server coordinates the scheduling of
anti-virus scans, receives alerts, and generates reports
for the entire anti-virus domain.
The Management Server runs the Scheduler,
Management Agent, Alert Manager, Name Provider,
Response Manager, and Update Manager. It is the target
machine for virus alerts from member machines. It also
sends commands to them to perform scans at
user-determined times.
The Management Server must therefore be a
Windows NT server. Choose a server with spare
capacity, so that it is not over-burdened. If you have
fewer than 10 machines within your anti-virus domain,
you may use a Windows NT workstation.
The Master Repository is the central database of
anti-virus files for distribution. Once files are initially
copied to the Master Repository from CD, you can use
the Management Console to install and configure them.
Member machines are all the machines in an anti-virus
domain, except the Management Server. They don't
have to be in the same Microsoft network domain, and
they don't have to be on the same site. Member
machines can receive commands to start an on-demand
scan. They can also send alerts back to the Management
Server when on-demand or on-access scans find viruses.
Windows NT member machines may be configured to
generate alert messages by e-mail, pager, or SNMP.
