5-11 Replacing the Milling Cutter
Install the new milling cutter.
(1) Wipe off the grease on the cutter surface.
(2) Install the milling cutter.
• On a BQ-470 with a PUR tank, the chip cutter
and spacers must be mounted on the milling
cutter using four mounting screws.
When tightening the mounting screws for the
milling cutter, tighten opposite pairs of screws

(90 apart) by small amounts. This will prevent
the cutter from bending as you tighten the screws.
If the milling cutter has been re-ground and
the height of the cutter is reduced, insert
spacers with a total thickness equivalent to
this change in height between the milling
cutter and the cutter base.
Install the chip cutter. (for PUR tank only)
• Install using four mounting screws.
If spacers have been inserted under the
milling cutter to set the milling cutter to the
standard height, reduce the spacers under
the chip cutter. This ensures that the chip
cutter will be set to the standard height.
Install the upper knife.
• Mount it temporarily using the two mounting screws.
The upper knife should be pushed against
the positioning bolts.
• Insert a scrap of paper to check that there are
0.1mm (0.004") and 0.2mm (0.008") clearances
between the upper knife and the milling cutter
at the spaces shown in the right drawing.
Check that the 0.1mm (0.004") clearance is
approximately equivalent to one sheet of 63 gsm (16
lb bond) paper, and 0.2mm (0.008") is approximately
equivalent to two sheets of that paper. If the cutter
touches the sheets, the sheets will be marked. Use
this to determine that the clearances are correct.
Two upper knife shims are usually installed between
the upper knife and the milling cutter. The clearance
can be adjusted by the number of the shims. One
extra shim is attached as the accessory.
