Reinstalling the MP0 and MP1 Ion Guides

Thermo Scientific
To clean lens L1 and the split gate lens
IMPORTANT
Always use LC/MS-grade methanol and LC/MS-grade water (see
Table 7
on
page
55).
1. Using a magnification device, inspect the components for any lint, particulates, and
sample buildup or coatings.
Note After use, the surfaces can be discolored, which is normal and not to be
confused with sample buildup or coatings.
2. Soak Kimwipe tissues or chamois-tipped swabs in a 50:50 solution of methanol/water,
and then clean the components.
3. Sonicate the components in methanol for 10 minutes.
Note If using buffers or salt solutions in the mass spectrometer, you might need to
use an aqueous solution for cleaning. If using an aqueous solution, flush the items
with LC/MS-grade water and then with LC/MS-grade methanol.
4. Dry the components with nitrogen gas to make sure that all the solvent evaporates.
5. Using a magnification device, inspect the components for any residual lint or particulates.
Note Inspect the inside surfaces and edges to confirm that no lint or particulates are
present. Use tweezers or a similar tool to remove the lint or particulate.
To reinstall the MP0 and MP1 ion guides
CAUTION Be aware of the following:
• Be careful not to bend or break the lead pins on multipoles MP0 and MP1.
• If multipole MP0 is not positioned correctly, it could be too far forward and
touch the vacuum manifold.
1. Reinstall the MP0 ion guide as follows:
a. Insert lens L1 into the opening in the baffle

page
b. For the LXQ and LTQ XL, do the following:
i.
With one hand, hold multipole MP0 against lens L1 and press L1 against the
opening in the baffle. Make sure the contact pin is up and away from the top
cover plate.
ii. With the other hand, install the MP0 support bracket at the other end of
multipole MP0 by lowering and sliding it back toward MP0.
