Cleaning Procedures

For cleaning purposes, the RetCam System is divided into two categories:
• The Lens Piece that contacts the patient
• The rest of the system

Cleaning the Lens Piece

Clean the patient contact area lens immediately after use to prevent the coupling gel from
hardening.
To clean the lens piece:
1. Wipe away excess coupling gel and debris from the front lens piece surface with a soft
dry tissue, sterile water soaked tissue, or both.
2. Using a clean soft cloth (such as sterile gauze) saturated in a fresh solution of 70% IPA
(isopropyl alcohol), gently wipe the front of the lens piece, being sure to pay special
attention to the concave contact lens area, to remove coupling gel and any remaining
debris. You must wipe the lens piece at least 11 times using a fresh and clean wiping
surface for each wipe. You can use pre-packaged 70% IPA swabs (such as ReliOn
Alcohol swabs or BD Alcohol Swabs).
3. Rinse the lens surface thoroughly using sterile water.
4. Air dry the lens.
5. Visually verify that the lens surface is free of debris and coupling gel. Repeat steps
through
6. Visually inspect the lens for damage. Do not use the lens if there are chips, cracks, or
rough edges on the lens.
7. This cleaning procedure is not a disinfection procedure. If disinfection is desired, follow
the Institution disinfection procedures for a reusable ophthalmic device.
