ANTENNA
DESCRIPTION
The antenna is integral to the windshield. The
antenna attaches to a single terminal wire that is
part of the antenna module.
OPERATION
The windshield antenna sends a signal to the
antenna module and it reduces any RFI received in
the signal.
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - ANTENNA
Any diagnosis of the Audio system should
begin with the use of a scan tool and the appro-
priate Diagnostic Service Manual.
Refer to the appropriate wiring information.
WARNING:
DISABLE
BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY STEERING WHEEL,
STEERING COLUMN, SEAT BELT TENSIONER, SIDE
AIRBAG, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENT
DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. DISCONNECT AND ISO-
LATE THE BATTERY NEGATIVE (GROUND) CABLE,
THEN WAIT TWO MINUTES FOR THE AIRBAG SYS-
TEM CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE BEFORE PER-
FORMING FURTHER DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. THIS
IS THE ONLY SURE WAY TO DISABLE THE AIRBAG
SYSTEM. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRE-
CAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIR-
BAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL
INJURY.
(1) Check the following electrical connections:
• Antenna lead connection at the radio
• Windshield antenna lead connector at front of
the instrument panel (Fig. 2).
• Three antenna amplifier connectors.
(2) Using an ohmmeter check for continuity at the
antenna module:
• Antenna module lead connector to the radio
antenna lead connector
• Antenna module lead connector to the connector
at the front of the instrument panel
• Antenna module bracket to a good ground
(3) Using an voltmeter, turn ignition switch to ON
position, check for battery voltage at the antenna
module connector.
(4) Move the vehicle outside and at least 10 meters
(35 feet) from the nearest building. Turn ignition
switch to the accessory position, turn radio ON, with
a very weak AM station ON. Very weak is defined as
a station the radio will not seek to. You should hear
background noise, but still be able to understand the
program material.
(a) Disconnect antenna lead connector at the
front of the instrument panel. There should be a
great drop in reception quality. If this occurs, the
antenna and antenna module are OK. Using an
ohmmeter, check for continuity of antenna. Place
one probe on antenna lead and the other at the
end of the antenna. If no continuity, repair using
Mopar rear window defogger repair kit or equiva-
lent (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/HEATED GLASS/
WINDSHIELD
PROCEDURE). Check for continuity after repair. If
not OK, verify by connecting a 1.5 meters (5 ft.)
piece of wire to the terminal and holding it verti-
cal. Check for improvement in radio reception qual-
ity. If OK, replace windshield. If not OK, go to Step
b.
