LEANING PROCEDURES
REVENT AND RESPOND TO SPILLS AT THE
Cleaning procedures
Swisslog has published various guides and white papers containing recommendations for preventing,
responding to, and cleaning spills and leaks in the pneumatic system. Adhere to the procedures for decon-
tamination as recommended by Swisslog and published by your organization. Swisslog publications are
available on the Swisslog Customer Service portal. See the following:

Swisslog white paper entitled Four Critical Procedures for Infection Control with a Pneumatic Tube
System.

Prevent and respond to spills at the Nexus Station
Prevent spills and leaks by training system users to properly package various payloads and fasten carriers
before sending them through the pneumatic tube system. In addition, ensure that Nexus Station users know
how to shut down the station from the control panel and notify the administrator of your tube system
should a leak or spill occur at the station. Standard guidelines for packaging materials in PTS carriers are
outlined for users in the Nexus Station User Operations Guide.
IMPORTANT! Use the following information as a guideline only, to complement but not
supersede protocols required by OSHA, CDC, your organization, federal, state, and other
regulatory and governing agencies.
Swisslog defers to the experts at each organization running a pneumatic tube system to
determine proper transport, handling, and clean-up of any biologically hazardous material.
The Nexus Station is designed so that spills occurring above the station mechanics are directed to an
opening to the right of the lower turnstile that drains into a spill container positioned under the opening.
Spill container
When a spill or leak occurs at a Nexus Station, immediately shut down the system and/or affected zones
as necessary to contain the spill. Follow your organization's decontamination policy, and begin cleaning out
affected components of the pneumatic tube system as soon as possible. Procedures and cleaning materials
may vary depending on the nature of the material that has leaked or spilled in the system.
Using the disinfectant that your organization has specified for cleaning contaminated surfaces in the
facility, thoroughly wipe station surfaces with a microfiber or other lint-free cloth. Specific recommenda-
tions for cleaning Nexus Station components are outlined next.
TIP. Other hospitals have successfully employed a 1:10 dilution of bleach (5.25% sodium
hypo-chloride) to water for most spills. Commercial bleach-based disinfectant wipes can be
used to clean smaller spills or leaks.
