22.4.7 Creating virtual machines

In this section, we discuss how to create virtual machines.
Prerequisites
The prerequisites for creating virtual machines are:
VMware VI ESX Host or vSphere Host with all current patches
VMware vCenter Server access
Available space on SAN or Local VMFS-3 volumes
Resource availability in the Virtual Datacenter
Administrative privilege on the VMware ESX Server host where the guest will be deployed
OS License for the "to-be deployed" guest
In this section, we explain how to create a virtual machine. How you configure your virtual
machines is dictated by your requirements (guest operating system, virtual hardware
requirements, function, and so on).
We selected the creation of a virtual machine running Windows 2008 as an example.
To create a virtual machine:
1. Log into the vCenter Client with appropriate credentials.
2. Expand the left pane to locate the VM Host that the Guest will reside on. Right-click the
Host, and choose New Virtual Machine. A wizard starts. See Figure 22-72 on page 723.
