You should follow the sequence of steps below to connect DS3500 controllers A and B to
multiple EXP3500 expansion enclosures that each have two ESMs installed:
1. Connect the first EXP3500 expansion enclosure to DS3500 controller A:
a. Connect one end of a SAS cable to the drive expansion OUT port on the DS3500
controller A.
b. Connect the other end of the SAS cable to one of the IN SAS connectors on the left
ESM in the EXP3500 expansion enclosure.
2. Connect the left ESM of the EXP3500 expansion enclosure to the next EXP3500
expansion enclosure in the chain:
a. Connect one end of a SAS cable to the SAS OUT connector on the left ESM of the
EXP3500 expansion enclosure that you just connected.
b. Connect the other end of the SAS cable to one of the IN SAS connectors on the left
ESM in the next EXP3500 expansion enclosure in the chain.
c. Repeat steps 2a and 2b for each EXP3500 expansion enclosure that you add.
3. Connect the last EXP3500 expansion enclosure in the chain to DS3500 controller B:
a. Connect one end of a SAS cable to the drive expansion port on the DS3500 controller
B.
b. Connect the other end of the SAS cable to one of the IN SAS connectors on the right
ESM in the last EXP3500 expansion enclosure of the chain that you created.
4. In reverse order (last in chain to first in chain), connect the right ESMs in the EXP3500
expansion enclosures in the chain:
a. Connect one end of a SAS cable to the OUT SAS connector on the right ESM of the
EXP3500 expansion enclosure that you just connected.
b. Connect the other end of the SAS cable to one of the IN SAS connectors on the right
ESM of the previous EXP3500 expansion enclosure in the chain.
c. Repeat steps 4a and 4b until you connect the right ESM of the first EXP3500
expansion enclosure in step 2 to the right ESM of the EXP3500 expansion enclosure in
step 1.

4.6.6 Adding an EXP3500 enclosure to a running dual-controller configuration

In this section we describe the steps required to attach an EXP3500 enclosure to a running
DS3500 configuration. There are two possible scenarios when attaching an EXP3500 to a
running DS3500 configuration:
There are no EXP3500 enclosures already attached.
There are EXP3500 enclosures already attached.
Attention: You must ensure that each EXP3500 expansion enclosure has two ESMs
installed before you connect it to a dual-controller DS3500 storage subsystem.
Adding one EXP3500 to a running DS3500 configuration with no
EXP3500 enclosures attached
In this scenario, there are no EXP3500 enclosures already attached to the DS3500. We use
this sequence of steps to attach the EXP3500 to the DS3500:
1. You must ensure that the DS3500 storage subsystem status is Optimal in the DS Storage
Manager software.
