Managing Files
System Log
System Log files contain messages from all software processes used by the system, including
system information, software errors, and trunk alarms. The system compiles a daily log of trunk
mishaps (slips and framing errors), internal software problems (process stuck and data parity
errors), and various system activities.
The log file records each instance of modification to the Maintenance and Administrator
databases (configurations). Technicians use logs for pinpointing causes of system malfunctions,
system maintenance procedures, and performance evaluation. The name of the log file is the
current date (for example, Aug06). The system stores a maximum of 30 log files, automatically
deleting the oldest file as necessary.
You can directly access daily log files from the /usr/dcb/logs directory.
Note:
The System Log files are generated using the Linux syslog utility. For more information on this
utility refer to the Linux manpages for syslogd(1M) and syslog.conf(4bsd).
To view the manpages, at a Linux prompt type this:
man 4bsd syslog.conf
