v Power-On System
Allows immediate power-on of the system.
v Power-Off System
This option is not available on this system.
v Enable/Disable Fast System Boot
Allows the user to select the IPL type, mode, and speed of the system boot.
Attention:
Selecting the fast IPL results in several diagnostic tests being skipped and a shorter
memory test being run.
v Boot Mode Menu
Your system is setup as either a partitioned or a non-partitioned system. Select the boot mode section
that reflects yours system's setup.
Partitioned systems:
If the system is partitioned, also called running in LPAR mode, the Linux compatibility mode is
set using the boot mode menu:

Selecting option 1 toggles the Linux compatibility mode between enabled and disabled.
The Linux compatibility mode should be set because your 7028 Model 6C4 system platform
firmware level 3R0305dd inadvertently introduces an incompatibility with the SuSE Linux SLES8
GA kernel and the SLES8 service pack 1 (SP1) kernel. This incompatibility will be removed with
the SLES8 service pack 2 (SP2) kernel which is scheduled to be available in the fourth quarter
of 2003.
This incompatibility only exists on 7028 Model 6C4 systems when operating in logical
partitioning mode. For logical partitioning operation with 3R0305dd and later levels of platform
firmware, and SuSE Linux SLES8 GA or SP1, there is a service processor menu option that
provides compatibility between these versions of Linux and platform firmware. The Linux
compatibility mode should be enabled for these configurations. The Linux compatibility mode is
found in the boot mode submenu, which is option 7 under the service processor system power
control menu.
If Linux compatibility is not enabled in these configurations, the system may experience boot
time or run time failures due to the inability to access I/O adapters. Such I/O adapter access
failures may prevent the system from booting or cause loss of adapter use during run time. After
SLES8 SP2 is installed, the Linux compatibility mode can again be disabled; in fact, it is
recommended that this mode be disabled when SLES8 SP2 is installed. This Linux compatibility
mode is saved in nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM) of the system, so it only needs to be enabled
once.
This 7028 Model 6C4 incompatibility specifically relates to the CEC I/O group, Group_128,
which contains the following devices in the 7028 Model 6C4 system drawer: PCI slots 1 and 2
(U0.1-P2-I1 and U0.1-P2-I2), one integrated ethernet (U0.1-P2/E2), both ports on the integrated
dual-port SCSI controller (U0.1-P2/Z1 and U0.1-P2/Z2), and the ISA bus (which is shown as
U0.1-P1 on the HMC) and subsidiary devices (the integrated serial ports and the IDE controller).
