Chapter 8: Bank Select and Channel Assign

The Master Bank Select, Channel Bank Select, and Channel Assign sections are located at
the center of the console.
The two Bank Select sections assign channels onto the console's 48 physical faders. The
upper and lower banks of 24 faders can be assigned completely independently; thus,
there are two identical Bank Select sections.
There are two sets of bank select buttons: Channel and Master. The Channel Bank select
buttons assign faders in groups of 24. All 24 faders are remapped to the selected channel
bank at once. Alternately, the Master Bank select works in buckets of eight channels at a
time. All of the channels on the console can be assigned to faders using either the Master
or Channel Bank select buttons.
In addition, the UMX.96 has two user banks that let you have it your way. In the past, the
input list pretty much determined how things came up on the faders. The first input on the
stage box ended up at fader 1 on the console. Most often, it was the headliner that dictat-
ed where things got patched, so whoever mixed for the opener had to adapt to whatever
map the stars wanted. True, you could reassign things between the snake and the console,
but who wants to do that during the set change? The User Banks let you put any channel
on the console into any position on either of the two user banks. When you assign a chan-
nel to a user bank fader, you are assigning everything on the channel strip associated with
that channel: the channel meter, scribble strip, V-Pot, ASSIGN, MUTE, SELECT buttons as
well as the fader. Note that this problem can also be solved using input patching which is
described in Section 12.8. User banks are described in detail in Section 12.9.5.

Bank Control Section

There are two types of banks on the UMX.96: Channel and Master.
• A Channel Bank is a group of 24 channels. These include the analog input channels,
aux/group masters, and the two user banks. In the future, Expansion inputs will also be
accessible from a channel bank.
• A Master Bank is a group of 8 channels. These are groups of channels that you want to
access quickly, make a quick change, and then return to your previous channels. These
include internal and external returns, matrix masters, and VCAs.

Channel Bank Selection

These are large backlit buttons. Channel bank assignment is achieved by pressing one
of the seven Channel Bank Select buttons. The Channel Bank Select buttons act in an
exclusive fashion allowing only one to be selected at a time. As previously mentioned, the
channel bank assignment works in groups of 24 faders and thus reassigns all faders in the
corresponding bank only.
The following Channel Banks can be assigned:
ANLG 1-24 and ANLG 25-48 — These channel bank buttons select the analog input chan-
nels 1-24 and 25-48 accordingly. These are normally fed by the 48 mic inputs on the rear of
the console, but may be reassigned using the routing screen (see Section 12.8.1).
EXP 49-72 and EXP 72-96 — These buttons select the expansion channels 49-72 and
73-96 accordingly. These channels are fed by inputs from the expansion connector on the
rear panel. Currently, these buttons have no function and the channels essentially do not
exist when an expansion unit is not present.
