The File System

The UMX.96 saves every parameter associated with its operation with the exception of the power switch.
The current state of all parameters is constantly stored so the console powers on in the same state as when it
was turned off, just like an analog console.
There are two types of internal storage: flash (current show, current configuration, current state) and hard
disk (snapshots, shows, configurations, presets).
The UMX.96's file structure is designed to be convenient in a live mixing environment. The heart of the struc-
ture is the idea that in any live environment, some mixing parameters are set based on the environment the
mixer is in, who the operator is, and what the console is connected to, while other parameters are depen-
dant upon the actual performance passing through the mixer. With this in mind all parameters that can be
saved are classified into one of two groups: Configurations and Shows.
Configurations and Shows can be created, opened, or saved completely independently.
• All information pertaining to how the UMX.96 connects and communicates with the outside world and
the operator is saved into a Configuration.
• All information related to the performance is saved into a Show. A Show is made up of multiple snapshots.
• You can create multiple Configurations and Shows.
Snapshots, presets, shows, and console configurations are stored on the console and can be copied to an
attached USB mass storage device (like a thumb drive or external hard drive).
• Snapshot — Snapshots save the current state of the console, including faders, mutes, EQ, mic preamp set-
tings, etc.
• Show — A show is a group of up to 299 snapshots. The console can save many shows (limited by disk
space on the internal drive).
• Configuration — A console configuration saves all Setup related parameters. A console only has a single
configuration loaded at a time, but a virtually unlimited number can be stored on the internal hard drive
or a USB drive. It is used for engineers to configure the operating settings of the console with one easy
step.
• Current State — When the console wakes up, it wakes in the state that it was in when it was shut down.
Some settings are only saved to the current state and are not saved to a show or configuration. These in-
clude the currently selected master and channel banks, the selected channel assign control, and the VCA
bank state.
• Preset — Presets save parameters for a particular DSP function, such as EQ, dynamics, routing, FX, etc.
For example, if you have a favorite kick drum EQ setting, you can save it as a preset, and apply it when
needed. Presets are not associated with a particular show or channel, so they can be applied across differ-
ent shows and/or channels.
See Section 12.13.2 for a list of parameters and whether they are saved with a Configuration, Show, or Cur-
rent State.
