Chapter 7: The Channel Section

There are 6 channel sections, located on the left hand side of the console, each containing 8 channel strips.
These sections are referred to as "buckets. " There are three buckets, or 24 channels in each of two banks for 48
total channel faders. The channel functionality can be changed by using the Master Bank and/
or Channel Bank select buttons to the right of the channel section (see Section 8.1 for more
details). Each channel section is modular and replaceable from the top via chassis screws and a
power and data connection. Each individual channel contains the following control elements:
7.1

Metering

The channel metering has two parts: a six-segment tri-color meter used for monitoring signal
level and two LEDs located on either side of the channel meter that indicate gain reduction
activity in the gate or compressor sections of the channel. For input channels, the meters can
be switched globally to show pre-DSP or post-DSP signal level via the Setup>General screen
(see Section 12.10.2) and the level meter's clip indicator illuminates when clipping in the mic
preamp or digital clipping occurs. For output channels, the channel meters show the signal at
the physical output so the OL LED lights to indicate clipping of the output DAC.
7.2

Scribble Strip

The scribble strip is an alpha-numeric LCD capable of displaying 2 rows of 6 characters per
channel. It is so named because normally the scribble strip displays the name for that channel,
what you'd scribble on the white tape usually used on an analog console. The digital version
on the UMX.96 also shows the current Channel Assign setting of the V-Pot below it. Sometimes
the system temporarily takes over the scribble strip to prompt you or to display parameter
values as you make an adjustment. This is described in detail for each Channel Assign button
described in Section 8.2.

V-Pot

The V-Pot (Virtual Potentiometer) allows individual channel control and viewing of important
parameters. The V-Pot has a knob, a ring of 15 red LEDs, a bottom amber LED, and a button
accessed by pressing down on the knob. The operation of these controls is dependent on the
currently enabled Channel Assign section. The V-Pot behavior for a specific function is detailed
in the description of that function in the Channel Assign Section 8.2.1 and 8.2.2.

Assign Button
Like the V-Pot, the multicolor ASSIGN button also is multifunctional and depends on the cur-
rently enabled button in the Channel Assign section. Descriptions of the Assign button behav-
ior for a specific function are detailed in the description of that function in the Channel Assign
Section 8.2.1 and 8.2.2.

Mute Button

The mute button is a red backlit button that is lit when the channel is muted and unlit when it
is passing signal. By default, no channels are muted.
A flashing mute button indicates a channel that is muted as a result of a mute group or VCA.

tion on VCA muting, see Section 10.1.
