Troubleshooting Procedures (Continued)
Problem
Bad heater.
Short in wiring.
Bad Card.
Mis-wired mold, cable, or controller.
Moisture in the heater.
Heater is not heating sufficiently
(undersized or low input voltage).
Temperature of the heater cannot be
sensed (pinched or displaced
thermocouple).
Thermocouple has been connected
with reversed polarity.
Card is not calibrated.
Card is nonfunctional.
Mold is much colder than ambient.
Possible Causes
Solution
Read the mold electrical prints and
use an ohmmeter or insulation
resistance meter to inspect the
cables and mold. It is possible that
this is not a controller issue, but the
connectors on the back of the
controller must be inspected as well.
Interchange the card with a known
good unit and see if the error returns.
If not, replace bad the card.
If moisture is suspected, set the zone
temperature to a 200 °F (93 °C) and
apply heat until the moisture has
been baked out of the heater.
Insufficient heat can be low supply
voltage. Do a check of the supply
voltage and make sure that this mold
has run successfully at the present
voltage. If not, connect the controller
to a supply with sufficient voltage.
In some conditions, the current
reading may be used to see if current
does flow through the heater. If no
current flows, a wiring fault or bad
heater could be the problem.
Shorted, detached, mis-positioned
or pinched thermocouples are
possibilities. Do a check of the cables
and wiring in the mold to make sure
the thermocouples are correctly
routed and terminated.
Insufficient heat can be low supply
voltage. Do a check of the supply
voltage and make sure that this mold
has run successfully at the present
voltage. If not, connect the controller
to a supply with sufficient voltage.
