Transmission Gearshift Linkage Adjustment,
Preliminary Inspection
S If shifting problems are encountered, the transmis-
sion linkage can be adjusted on some chain drive
models.
S Refer to the procedures and illustrations on the fol-
lowing pages to identify the type.
S Tighten shift linkage rod end jam nuts properly after
adjustment. You should be able to rotate the linkage
rod between 1/8 and 1/4 turn after both jam nuts are
tight.
S The transmission shift linkage should be periodically
inspected for wear and parts replaced as required to
remove excess play from shift linkage.
S Perform torque stop adjustment (on models so
equipped) before adjusting shift linkage.
S Refer to Transmission chapter for more information.

Torque Stop Adjustment

Adjust the torque stop:
S Prior to shift linkage adjustment;
S When shifting difficulties are encountered;
S If transmission has been removed from the frame.
NOTE: The torque stop is located on the bottom left hand
side of the transmission (where applicable).
1. Loosen jam nut (A).
2. Turn adjuster bolt (B) out until it touches the frame,
and then an additional 1/2 turn.
3. Tighten the jam nut securely while holding the
adjuster bolt.
