Chapter 8: Maintenance

Preparing the Persulfate Oxidizing Solution

GEAI recommends disposing of any aged persulfate oxidizing solution appropriately before preparing a new
solution. It is a good laboratory habit to avoid mixing new persulfate solution with aged persulfate solution to
eliminate the possibility of diluting the solution.
The persulfate oxidizer powder solution is available from GEAI. Dissolving 4 kg of the oxidizer powder in
deionized water (or comparable water) to the 4th fill line [indicated on the 13.2 L (3.5 gal) carboy] makes 3.2 L of
30% oxidizer reagent.

To prepare the oxidizing solution

To prepare the oxidizer solution using increments, follow the directions printed on the carboy label.
1.
Pour 1, 2, 3, or 4 kg of the oxidizer powder into an empty 3.5 gallon carboy.
2.
Fill the carboy with deionized water (or comparable water) until it reaches the appropriate (1, 2, 3, or 4
bottle) fill mark identified on the carboy.
3.
Shake the carboy for approximately one minute to mix the oxidizer powder with the water.

:
For information on handling and disposing of the oxidizer, refer to the appropriate sodium
OTE
persulfate material data safety sheet (MSDS).

Preparing the Acid

The InnovOx On-Line TOC Analyzer is designed to operate with either of two different acids: 6 M phosphoric acid
(H
PO
) and 3M hydrochloric acid (HCl). Phosphoric acid is preferred where salts in the sample will not form
3
4
precipitates in the acid due to the presence of the phosphate anions. If precipitate formation is problem, use 3M
hydrochloric acid.
To prepare the Acid
Transfer the acid into the Acid carboy, and insert the tube assembly into the carboy.

Adding the Dilution Water

Fill the "Dilution Water" 19 L (5 gal) carboy with deionized water or the best-quality water available to you.

Performing a Flush

When installing new reagents, perform a flush to clear the tubing of bubbles and old solution.
To perform a flush
1.
Select the Maintenance tab.
