This tutorial shows you how to set up your ZyXEL Device's VLAN options in order
to segregate the various devices attached to it based on function.
Figure 51 Example VLAN
1
In this example, there are three distinct types of connections:
• Connection 1 - The notebook computer and desktop computer connect to
router then to web servers, giving them Internet access..
• Connection 2 - The IP Phones connect to the router then to the VoIP servers,
allowing it to place phone calls over the Internet.
• Connection 3 - The HDTVs (with set-top boxes attached) connect to the router
then to the IPTV servers, which provide streaming television shows and movies
to them over the Internet.
In order to make this work, you must configure VLANs to route traffic accordingly.
Internet traffic goes only to the notebook and desktop computers; VoIP traffic
goes only to the IP Phones; and streaming TV goes only to the HDTVs. Without
VLANs, traffic from any one of the three server types gets distributed evenly to all
attached devices; this not causes significant problems with the devices that
receive the unwanted traffic, it also eats up all your bandwidth.
Note: This tutorial requires that the ZyXEL Device is set to WAN Mode.
