F ederal la w p rohibits the follow ing acts or causing thereof:
(1) T he rem oval or rend ering inop erative b y an y pe rson other than for purp oses of m aintenance, repair, or replacem ent,
of an y d evice or elem ent of design incorporated in to an y n e w vehicle for the p urpose of noise control prior
to its sale or delivery to th e ultim ate purchaser o r w hile it is in use, and
(2) the use of the vehicle after such device or elem ent of design has been rem oved o r rende red inope rative by an y
person.
A m ong those acts presum ed to co nstitute tam perin g are the acts listed belo w .
1) R em oval of, o r puncturing the m uffler, baffles, h eader pipes or a n y othe r com pon ent w hich condu cts exhaust gase s.
2) R em oval or p u ncturing of an y p art of the intake s ystem .
3) Lack of prop er m aintenance.
4) R eplacing an y m oving part of the vehicle, or parts of the exha ust or intake s ystem , w ith pa rts othe r than those
specified by the m anufacture r.
