- Protect your face , hand s and arms from escaping fluid and
steam by covering the cap with a large, thick rag.
- Turn the cap slowly and very carefully
in
a counter-clockwise
direction while applying light, downward pressure on the top
of the cap.
- To avoid being burned, do not spill ant ifreeze or coolant on
the exhaust system or hot engine parts. Under certain condi-
tions, the ethylene glycol in engine coolant can catch fire .
• Antifreeze is poisonous. Always store antifreeze in its original
container and well out of the reach of children .
• If you drain the coolant, it must be caught and safely stored in
a proper container clearly marked "poison ".

• Coolant pollutes the environme nt and could cause an engine fire.
Excess coo lan t w ill be forced out t hroug h t he pressure re lief va lve in
the cap when the eng ine becomes hot .
If, in an eme rgency, only wate r can be ad d ed, t he co rrect rat io
between water and antifreeze=.- page 210 must be restored as soon
as possib le .

Drained coolan t should no t be reused. Always dispose of used coolant
w hile observ ing a ll enviro nmental regulations . •

The radiat or fa n switches on aut oma tically by its elf .
The elect ric radiator fan is cont rolled by thermoswitches
t ha t sw itch
on and off depen d ing on coolant and engine compartment
tempera -
tures .
An auxiliary e lectric rad iator fan* sw itches on and off depend ing on
coo lant t empe rat ure and other vehicle o per at ion cond it ion s.
After you sw itch the eng ine off, the aux iliary fa n can con t inue running
for up to 10 m inutes - even w it h the ignition off. It ca n even switch on
agai n lat er by itse lf ::::.- & , if
the tempera t ure of the engine coolant rises due to the heat build-
up fro m th e eng ine in t he eng ine comp art me nt, or
the engine compartment
heats up because the vehicle is par ked in
int ense sun ligh t .

WARNING
• To reduce the risk of personal injury never touch the radiator
fan .
• The auxiliary electric fan is temperature controlled and can
switch on suddenly even when the engine is not running .
• The auxiliary radiator fan switches on automatically when the
engine coolant reaches a certain temperature and will continue to
run until the coolant temperature drops . •
