Electronic
differential
lock (EDL)
The elec tronic differen tial lock monitors the rotational
speed of the drive wheels.
G e n e r a l not es
The electronic differe ntia l lock (EDL) helps t he ca r to sta rt moving,
accelerate and climb a gradient on surfaces provid ing poor or almost
no grip . W ithout EDL, this would be d iff icu lt, if not impossible.
How the sy stem
works
The EDL operates automatically.
It mo nitors the rota t ional speed of
the drive wheels on an axle with the he lp of the ABS sensors
~
page 175. If
a not iceable
difference in rotational speed
between
the drive wheels on one axle is detected (e.g. on slippery ground
on
one side),
t he spinning whee l is braked, the reby trans fer ring power to
the other dr ive wheel or wheels (all-wheel drive) . This is done up to a
speed of about 60 mph (100 km/h). Noises from the brake system
signal t hat wheel sp in is being controlled .
Driv ing off
When driving off, always be sure to keep road conditions in mind as
you acce lerate . If one d rive wheel spins because it is on a surface with
less grip, gradually increase the pressure on the accelerator pedal
until the car sta rts to move. The whee l less ab le to transfer power
spms .
Overheating
of brakes
To prevent the disc brake of the braked wheel from overheating if
subjected to excessive loads, the EDL cuts out temporarily. The
vehicle remains operat ional and behaves in the same way as a vehicle
without EDL.
As soon as the brake has coo led down, EDL sw itches on again auto-
matically.
&
WARNING
Wh en accelerating on slippery surfaces, such as on ice or snow,
alway s be careful when depre ssing the accelerat or pedal. Even
with the EDL working , the driv e whee ls can spin and reduce your
ability to cont rol you r car. - Risk of crash!
The increased safety afforded by EDL does not mean that you
can take safety risks. Always adapt your driving style to t he road
condit ions and traffic situation .

Tips
If a fau lt occurs in the ABS, the EDL is also not funct io ning. This is
indicated by the ABS warning light ~

Anti-Slip
Regulation
System
(ASR)
The An t i-Slip Regulation S yst em prevents the driv en
wheels from spinning when the car is accelerating .
General
note s
The Anti-Slip Regu lation System (ASR) is integrated
in the electronic
stabilization program (ESP). When the vehicle starts up and acceler-
ates, the wheels are prevented from sp inning by adjust ing the engine
power to match the amount of grip available from the road surface.
How the system
works
ASR perfo rms automatica lly, i.e . witho ut the driver's intervention .
With the aid of the ABS sensors~
page 175,
ASR monito rs the speed
of the dr iven wheels . If the wheels start to spin, the engine torque is
reduced automatically
unt il the t ires find enough gr ip to lock onto
the road surface. The system is active across the entire speed range.
The ASR wor ks in conj unction with t he ABS. If a mal f unction sho uld
occur in the ABS, the ASR w ill also be out of action.
