ABS operation
When a vehi cle speed of about 10 mph (20 km/ h) is reac hed, a n auto -
matic test sequence is run . Some noise from the pump may be
audib le.
If the speed of a wheel slows dow n t oo m uch re lat ive t o veh icle speed
and it starts to lock, bra ke pressure to this wheel is red uced. This
adjus t me nt process can be fe lt as a pulsing motion of the brake
pedal , accompan ied by some noises. You as the dr iver are intention-
ally be ing given t he informat ion t hat the w hee ls are ten di ng to lock
(ABS contro l range). In orde r for ABS to be ab le to operate o pt imally
in this range, you m ust keep the brake pedal depressed - do not
"pu mp the brakes" .
Brake

Automatic

braking
This f unction all ows full bra king in sp ite of high bra ke pe dal for ces
(e.g . when the brakes are severe ly stressed because the vehicle is fully
loaded) . The driver notices t his function t hro ugh a reduction of peda l
force and increased pedal travel. When the brake pedal is released,
full braking assist switches off again automatically .
If t here is an ABS fa ilur e, t he brake assis t ant a nd automat ic full

WARNING
• ABS cannot suspend the laws of physic s . You should keep this
in mind in particular on an icy or wet road. If ABS control of
braking intervenes, you should adjust your speed immediately to
road and traffic condition s. Do not be tempted by the increased
safety provided to take risks - danger of an accident .
Please keep in mind that the risk of an accident is increased by
driving too fast , particularly in bends and on icy or wet roads, and

Electro-mechanical
power
assist
The elec tro-mechanical pow er assist helps the driver
whe n steering.
The degree of power assist is electronically matched to vehicle speed.
The powe r steering syst em ass ists t he dr iver so t hat he can stee r the
vehicle with reduced physical effort.
Powe r steering will not work if the engine is off. As a resu lt, the
st eer ing wheel will be ha rd t o t urn.
&
WARNING
If the system develops a problem, you must seek qualified profes-
sional assistance.

Note
If the re is an elect ronic malfunction, servotronic will still fu nction
like a conven t ional power st eer ing syst em, prov iding a con st an t

spee d . This is most not icea ble w hen t ur ning the stee ring whee l at low
speeds (for example whe n parking), - more effort will be required
