Operating
cond itions
and driving
habits
The brakes on today's automob iles are still subject to wear,
depending la rge ly on ope rating condi t ions and d riving habits ~ & .
On vehicles that are either driven mostly in stop-and-go city traffic or
are d riven ha rd, t he bra ke pads shou ld be checked by your author ized
Audi dea ler more often than specified in the
Warranty
&
Mainte·
nance booklet .
Failure t o have your brake pads inspe cte d can result
in reduced brake performance.
On steep slopes, you should use the brak ing effect of the eng ine. This
way, you prevent unnecessary wea r on the brake sys t em . If you must
use your brakes, do not hold the brakes down conti nuously . Pump the
bra kes at inte rvals.
Noises may occur when brak ing depend ing on the speed, braking
fo rce and ou t side con dit ions such as tempera t ure and hum idity .
Moisture
or road salt
Under certain co nd it io ns, for example , w hen dr iving th rough water or
very heavy rain, or even after wash ing your vehicle, the braking effect
can be reduced d ue to moistu re (or in freezing condi t ions ice) on the
brake pads. A few caut ious brake applications shou ld dry off the
bra ke pads or remove any ice coat ings.
The effect iveness of t he brakes can be reduced whe n the vehicle is
dr iven on a sa lt-covered road and the brakes are not used. Likewise,
you clean off accumula t ed sa lt coat ing from brake d iscs and pads
w ith a few cautious applications of the brake ~ & .
Corrosion
There may be a tendency for di rt to build up on the bra ke pads and
corros ion to fo rm on the d iscs if the car is not d riven regula rly or only
for short trips w ith litt le use of the brakes.
