To lock the steering after you have removed t he ig nit ion key, turn the
steering wheel in either direction until you hear it lock into place. You
should always lock t he steer ing whe neve r you leave you r vehicle. This
makes a vehicle theft even more difficult => & .

After switching off the ign ition, the ignition key can only be removed
from the ignition lock when the selector lever is in the "P" (Park) posi-
tion. After you have removed the key, the selector lever is locked and
canno t be moved.

If it is d ifficult to turn the key after you have inserted it into the igni-
tion lock, tur n the steering wheel back and fort h. This w ill take the
load off the steering lock mecha nism and you will be able to t ur n the
key freely and start the eng ine.
Starting

In this posit ion the engine starts. While the eng ine is starting, the
power supply to the hea d light s an d ot her el ect rical consume rs is
temporarily interr upted to conse rve battery power. Afte r the en gi ne
has sta rt ed, release th e key and it w ill return to posit ion @ .
Before the starter can be operated again the key must be turned back
t o pos itio n

starter w hen the eng ine is running.

WARNING
• Never remove the key from the ignition lock while the vehicle
is moving . The steering wheel will lock causing loss of control.
• If you have to leave your vehicle - even for just a minute·
always remove the ignition key and take it with you. This is espe-
cially important if you are going to leave children behind in the
vehicle. The children could start the engine or use other vehicle
controls . Unsupervised use of vehicle controls (for example , power
window s) can cause serious personal injuries.

then yo u m ust leave the key in position @ for about 5 seco nds befo re
you can star t the eng ine. •
