Booster seats raise th e seat ing pos it ion of t he child a nd repos ition
bot h th e lap and shou lder parts of th e saf ety be lt so t hat t hey pass
across the child's body in t he right places. The routing of th e belt over
t he child 's body is very important for t he chi ld's protectio n, whet her
or not a booster seat is used. Children age 12 and und er must a lways
ride in the rea r seat .
Children who are at least 4 ft. 9 in. (5 7 inch es/ 1.45 met ers) tall can
gene rally use the vehicle's th ree point lap and shoulder be lts. Never
use t he lap belt por tion of th e vehicle' s safe ty be lt a lon e to restrain
any child, regard less of how big the child is. Always remember that
children do not have the pronounced pelvic str uct ure require d fo r t he
proper function of lap bel t port io n of the vehicle's th ree point lap an d
sho ulder be lts . The ch ild's safety a bso lutely requires that a lap belt
port ion of t he safe t y belt be fas te ned snugly an d as low as possibl e
aroun d the pelvis . Never let t he lap belt po rtion of the safety belt
pass over t he child's st om ach o r abd ome n.
In a crash, airbags must inflate within a blink of an eye and with
considera ble fo rce . In o rder t o d o its j ob, t he airba g needs room to
inflate so that it w ill be there to protect the occupant as the occupa nt
moves forwar d into t he a irba g .
A vehicle occupan t who is out of posit ion and too clos e to th e a irbag
gets in th e way of an inflat ing airbag. Whe n an occ upant is too close,
he or she will be st ruck violently and will rece ive se rious or possibly
even fatal injury.
In orde r for t he airba g to offer prote ct ion, it is im port an t th at all
vehicle occupants , es pecially any child re n, who must be in the front
sea t bec a use of exceptiona l circums t an ces, be pro per ly res t ra ined
and as fa r away from the a irbag as poss ible. By keepi ng room
between the child's body and the front of the passenger compart -
ment, the a irbag can infla t e comple te ly and provide supp lem en t al
protection in ce rtain frontal collisions.
