Automatic
safety
belt
retractors
Every safety be lt is equipped with an automatic be lt retracto r on the
shoulder belt. This feat ure locks the be lt when the belt is pulled out
fast, d ur ing ha rd bra king an d in an accident. The belt may also lock
when you drive up or down a steep hill or throug h a sharp curve.
During normal dr iving the be lt lets you move freely.

pretensioners
The safety belts on the front seats are eq uipped with a belt preten-
sioner that helps to tighten the safety belt and remove slack when
t he prete nsio n er is act ivated. The function of the prete nsio ne r is
mon itored by a warning light => page 14 .
Switchable
locking
feature
Every safety belt except the one on the driver seat is equipped with a
switchab le locking feature t hat must be used when the saf ety belt is
used to attach a ch ild seat. Be s ure to read the important information
about thi s fe ature => page 159.

Improperly pos itioned safety belts can cause serious injury in an
accident => page 122, "Safety belt position ".

Safety belts offe r optimum protection only when the seat back
is upright and belts are properly positioned on the body.
Neve r attach the s afety belt to the buckle for another seat .
Attaching the belt to the wrong buckle will reduce safety belt
effecti veness and can cause serious personal injury.
• A passenger who is not properly restrained can be seriously
injured by the safety belt itself when it moves from the stronger
parts of the body into critical areas like the abdomen .
• Always lock the convertible locking retractor when you are
securing a child seat in the vehicle => page 160. •

Correct belt position is the key to gettin g maximum
protecti on from safety belts .
