Advanced

performance
Chan gi ng the vehicle's suspe nsion system can change the way that
t he Advanced Airbag System pe rforms in a crash. For example, using
tire-r im combinations
not approved by Aud i, lower ing t he veh icle,
chang ing the st iff ness of th e suspe ns io n, incl uding t he sp rings,
suspension struts, shoc k absorbe rs etc. can change the forces that
are mea su red by t he a irb ag sens ors and sen t t o t he ele ctron ic con t rol
unit. Some suspension changes ca n, for examp le, increase the force
levels measu red by the se nsors a nd ma ke t he airbag sys t em dep loy in
crashes in which it wou ld not deploy if the changes had not bee n
ma d e . Other kind s of changes may re du ce t he force levels meas ur ed
by t he senso rs and prevent the airbag from dep loying when it should .
The sensors in the safety belt buckle for the d river and front
passenger seat t ell t he e lectro nic co nt rol modu le if the safety be lt is
latched or not . If the safety be lt is be ing used, the front airbag will
dep loy at a slightl y hig her rat e of veh icle decelerat ion t han if t he
safety belt is not being used. The refore, in a part icular coll is io n, it is
po ssible t hat an a irbag will not deploy at a sea t ing posit io n where t he
safety belt is being used but will inflate at the position whe re t he
safety belt is not being used. It is impo rtan t t hat not hing int erfere
with t he safety bel t buck les so t hat t he sensors can sen d th e correct
information about safety belt use to the electronic control unit .
