SCSI-2 Device Interface Model

Three command interfaces are used to control the robotics inside Spectra Logic tape
libraries:
A front panel graphical user interface, accessed using a touch-screen display.
An RS-232 Serial/SCSI Command Language Interface (SSCL ). The SSCL
interface is explained in
commands are detailed in
The SCSI-2 interface with the extension for media-changers. The SCSI-2 command
descriptions are described in this chapter.
The SCSI-2 command interface conforms to the Draft Proposed American National
Standard Small Computer System Interface - 2 (SCSI-2) specification. For more
information concerning the SCSI-2 interface specifications, refer to ANSI Small
Computer System Interface (SCSI), Document Number X3.131.
Libraries, jukeboxes, and autochangers are media changers. Media changers automate the
movement of media between the primary devices of the media changer, tape drives, and
other locations within the changer.
The Spectra Logic family of tape libraries follows this model. Each library location that
can hold a tape cartridge (media), is called an element. Each element in the library must
have a unique address. The elements belong to one of four types.
Medium Transport Element - Gripper Arm Mechanism
Storage Element - Carousel Slot
Import/Export Element - Front Door
Data Transfer Element - 4mm SCSI Tape Drive
Tape cartridges can be moved to or from any of the elements in the library. The library
has sensors that determine which elements contain tape cartridges. This eliminates the
possibility of trying to locate multiple cartridges in the same element.
