cartridge movement and is always accurate following power-up. The library maintains a
current barcode label (Primary Volume Tag) for each cartridge in the library. If the
barcode labels were read, and the cartridge is, at some point, moved into a tape drive (data
transport element) or a gripper arm (media transport element), the label remains valid
and is reported to the host via the
If a cartridge is in the drive or a gripper arm at power-up or reset, the label is invalid and
may not be read until it is moved to the carousel. Otherwise, a cartridge's label is scanned
depending upon the state of the Read Volume Tag mode parameter. There are two types
of Read Volume Parameters;
If the Read Volume Tag parameter is enabled(default), the library automatically scans
a cartridge's labels long as the following two conditions are met: (1) it doesn't already
have a valid label, i.e. it hasn't been read previously; (2) the cartridge is being moved
to or from the carousel; for example, a cartridge in a drive at power-up is scanned
when it is moved into the carousel.
If the Read Volume Tag parameter is disabled, the Volume Tags of the cartridges are
only scanned when an
cartridge is not in the carousel when the
is received, and it does not have a valid Volume Tag, the label is not valid. Cartridges
without a valid label are reported as such with an ASCII
reports that the cartridge has not yet been read.
