DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING (CONTINUED)
Condition
• Cracks develop in rim base back
(rim bead seat) or the gutter
area (drop well radii)
• Damaged wheel stud threads
• Loose brake drum
• Broken wheel studs
• Stripped wheel stud threads
• Rust streaks from wheel stud
holes
• Damaged wheel nuts

Wheels and Tyres
Possible Sources
• Excessive lateral run out of
wheel or tyre.
• Damaged front wheel bearing.
• Overloading or abusive use.
• Incorrect use of tools.
• Sliding wheel across wheel
studs during assembly.
• Wheel studs too long.
• Loose wheel nuts.
• Overloading.
• Excessive torque.
• Loose wheel nuts.
• Loose wheel assembly.
• Over tightened wheel nuts.
Action
• Use a dial indictor gauge to
check the lateral run outs of
both the wheel and the tyre. If
either the wheel or tyre is out of
specification CHECK the lateral
run out of the wheel hub. When
components are out of specifica-
tion INSTALL new components.
REFER to Section 204-01.
• INSTALL new wheel. CHECK
loading and operating condi-
tions. Avoid over inflation of
tyres. CHECK specifications for
rim load capacity, working load,
tyre size, ply rating and tyre
construction.
• CHECK mounting, demounting,
and maintenance procedures.
• INSTALL new wheel studs.
TIGHTEN to specification.
• INSTALL new wheel stud of cor-
rect length.
• INSTALL new wheel studs.
TIGHTEN to specification.
• INSTALL new wheel studs.
TIGHTEN to specification. Com-
pare actual load against vehicle
load ratings.
• INSTALL new wheel studs.
TIGHTEN to specification.
• CHECK complete assembly. If
parts are damaged INSTALL
new parts. TIGHTEN to specifi-
cation.
• INSTALL new wheel nuts.
TIGHTEN to specification.
• FOLLOW correct tightening pro-
cedure.
