Manual Transaxle and Clutch — General Information
Possible Sources
• Inadequate gear synchroniza-
tion.
Possible Sources
• Sealing lip of the halfshaft oil
seal damaged.
• Fluid leaking between the trans-
axle housing sections or from
the selector mechanism mating
face.
Possible Sources
• Gearwheels.
• Damaged clutch.
• Selector forks or synchronizer
rings.
• Transmission fluid level too low. • Top up the transmission fluid.
• The engine/transaxle assembly
is in contact with the chas-
sis/body.
• Engine/transaxle flange bolts.
• Input and output shaft bearings.
Gear wheels (usually on high-
mileage vehicles).
Action
• INSTALL a complete set
(synchronizer hub and
synchronizer rings) and
INSTALL two new gear wheels
belonging to the synchronizer
unit.
– Because of various changes
and difficulty in estimating
the level of wear, a complete
new installation (as de-
scribed above) is recom-
mended.
Action
• INSTALL a new oil seal.
• Disassemble the transaxle;
clean the mating faces (CHECK
the surfaces for damage). Seal
the transaxle with liquid sealer
as described in the Service Mi-
crofiche.
Action
• INSTALL new gear wheels.
• REFER to Section 308-01.
• CHECK the components for
damage.
• Look for points of contact or
damaged engine/transaxle isola-
tor, roll restrictor.
• TIGHTEN the transaxle flange
bolts.
REFER to Section 308-03.
• Remove the transaxle. CHECK
the bearings and gear wheels
and INSTALL new parts as nec-
essary.
