Symptom
The system login prompt is displayed.
The system does not respond when the
password is entered.
The system stopped. A POST indicator is
displayed on the system console and an
eight-digit error code is not displayed.
The system stops with a 4-digit number
displayed in the operator panel display.
The System Management Services menu is
displayed.

Action
You may not have pressed the correct key, or
you may not have pressed the key soon
enough when you were to indicate a service
mode IPL of the diagnostic programs. If this is
the case, start over at the beginning of this

Note: Perform the system shutdown procedure
before turning off the system.
If you are sure you pressed the correct key in a

v Memory, go to "MAP 1540: Minimum

v Keyboard
1. Replace the keyboard cable.
2. Replace the keyboard.

v Network, go to "MAP 1540: Minimum
Configuration" on page 57.
v SCSI, go to "MAP 1540: Minimum
Configuration" on page 57.
v Speaker, go to "MAP 1540: Minimum

If the number displayed begins with the
character "8", "9", "A", or "B", go to "Service
Processor Checkpoints" on page 85.
If the number displayed is in the range
E1xx-EFFF, go to "Firmware Checkpoints" on
page 91.
For all other numbers, record SRN 101-xxx,
where xxx are the last three digits of the four
digits of the four-digit number displayed in the
operator panel display. Then go to the "Fast
Path MAP" in RS/6000 and Eserver pSeries
Diagnostic Information for Multiple Bus
Systems.
Note: If the operator panel displays two sets of
numbers, use the bottom set of numbers as the
error code.
