ASSEMBLY ANO INSTALLATION - 140 (COUNTER ROTATION)
Reverse Gear Backup Shim Adjustment
lnsert propeller shaft assembly propeller shaft bearing hous­
ing into forward gear.
Using Special Tools, install propeller shaft bearing housing
assembly into gearcase.

When housing is fully seated, install and tighten two bolts to
specified torque.

Bearing Housing bolt: 20 N-m
(2.0 kg-m; 14.5 lb-ft)
6. lnstall Gear Holder, P/N 342689, by attaching tool's base

to Propeller Shaft Bearing Housing with two gearcase
to dríveshaft housing bolts. Spacer(s) must be used to
reduce length (nuts that slide over bolts can be used).
Turn bolt ~ clockwise and thread collar onto the propel­
ler shaft@turns. Torque bolt

to 35-45 lb-in (4-5 Nrn).

Driveshaft Thrust Play
Follow the procedure below to adjust reverse gear to pinion
gear clearance.
1. Affix Dial lndicator to the driveshaft.
2. To check driveshaft thrust play, zero dial indicator, slowly
push driveshaft downward, then read maximum play.

Approx. 0.6 - 0.8 mm (0.024 - 0.031 in)
3. lf thrust play is larger than specified, thickness of reverse
gear back-up shim must be increased.
lf thrust play is smaller, reverse gear back-up shim thick­
ness must be decreased. lf reverse gear back-up shim is
replaced, repeat steps 1 and 2.
4. Once thrust play is correct, remove propeller shaft bear­
ing housing and propeller shaft.
