LOWER UNIT
ASSEMBLY ANO INSTALLATION-140 (NORMAL AOTATION)
Checking and Adjusting Tooth Contact Pattern
(Pinion and Forward Gear)
Make sure driveshaft thrust play is correct, then check tooth
contact pattern by using following procedure:
1. To assess tooth contact, if not previously done, apply a
light coat of Gear Marking Compound.

2. lnstall propeller shaft assembly with forward gear propel­
ler shaft thrust washer into forward gear.
3. Using Special tools, install propeller shaft bearing hous­
ing assembly into gearcase.

4. lnstall Gear Holder, P/N 342689, by attaching tool's base
CD
to Propeller Shaft Bearing Housing with two gearcase
to driveshaft housing bolts. Spacer(s) must be used to
reduce length (nuts that slide over bolts can be used).
Turn bolt
(í)
clockwise and thread collar onto the propel­
ler shaft 4 turns. Torque bolt ~ to 35-45 lb-in (4-5 N-m)

5. Using Driveshaft Holder, rotate driveshaft 5-6 times.

6. Without rotating propeller shaft and driveshaft, remove
Gearholder, Propeller Shaft Bearing Housing and propel­
ler shaft to check tooth contact patterns.
