IPS

IP Storage. In IP Storage, TCP/IP is used as a storage interconnect to transfer block level
data. An IETF working group, the IPS working group, is developing a set of standards
that address the use of the TCP/IP in transporting storage traffic. The iSCSI, iFCP and
FCIP protocols are examples of the protocol standards being developed by IETF IPS
working group.

IPv6

Internet Protocol next generation, A new version of the Internet Protocol (IP). The
official name of IPng is IPv6, where the v6 stands for version 6.

IPX

Internetwork Packet Exchange. IPX is a networking protocol used by the Novell®
NetWare® operating systems. IPX allows the StorTrends® iTX software to be used in a
pure NetWare® systems environment.

iSCSI

iSCSI is Internet SCSI, an IP-based storage networking standard which maps SCSI
blocks into Ethernet packets, developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
Basically, the iSCSI protocol is a method for transporting low latency SCSI blocks across
IP networks. By carrying SCSI commands over IP networks, iSCSI is used to facilitate
data transfers over intranets and to manage storage over long distances. The iSCSI
protocol increases the capabilities and performance of storage data transmissions.
Because of the wide use of IP networks, iSCSI can be used to transmit data over LANs,
WANs, or the Internet and can enable location-independent data storage and retrieval.

iSCSI Adapter

iSCSI Adapters run optimized logic on the adapter for TCP and iSCSI processing,
enabling high performance data throughput with lower CPU utilization. An iSCSI
Adapter can be a Host Bus Adapter (HBA) card, IS-NICs, and SNIC.

iSCSI-FC

iSCSI Fiber Channel. Usually used to describe an iSCSI-FC storage switch or router that
can pass block level data between two networks. Some IP Storage switches can also
provide switching among the protocols such as Fibre Channel switching, IP/Ethernet
switching, or Infiniband switching.
