The mounting flange assembly is the mechanism to which the inner source assembly is fitted.

1.5.3 The outer source assembly

You can access the outer source assembly, which comprises the source heater, PCB holder, and
focusing optics, from the front of the instrument. The heater in the outer source raises the source
temperature to stop the sample and matrix from condensing on the source. The lens stack
focuses the ion beam prior to entering the analyzer. Permanent magnets are used to spiral the
electrons into the inner source.
