1. INTRODUCTION

This D3241 manual provides step by step procedures
in setting up and performing an ASTM D3241 test on
the JFTOT II. ASTM D3241 requires the use of the
appropriate manual for the JFTOT being used. Refer
to ASTM D3241 for information on manuals for older
instruments. This manual is suitable for JFTOT 230
and 240 models from S/N 200 and beyond, until
superseded.
NOTE – It is the responsibility of the operator of
the instrument to have a current copy of ASTM
D3241.
This procedure assumes the D3241 test is selected
on the keypad. However, an ASTM D3241 test can
be performed by selecting the CUSTOM test. The
D3241 and CUSTOM tests are the same, except the
D3241 forces certain required parameters, for
example:
1. 150 minute test time
2. 3.0 mL/min flowrate
3. 6 minute fuel aeration within one hour of heater on
4. thermocouple is calibrated
5. only one ∆P is used
Using the CUSTOM test to perform an ASTM
D3241 test requires the operator to correctly setup
the test parameters. The test parameters are setup
from the CUSTOM SETUP display. The test time
and flowrate are adjusted in the secondary SETUP
display (press STEP for secondary SETUP display,
then EXIT to return to primary SETUP display). The
fuel needs to be aerated and the thermocouple needs
to be calibrated. If the thermocouple is not calibrated,
"(NO CAL)" will appear in the lower right corner.
For a Model 240, press F2 as required to setup for a
1dP test.
ALL OPERATORS MUST READ ALL OF SECTION 3 IN THE
OPERATION MANUAL BEFORE USING THE JFTOT II.

NOTE – Being able to perform an ASTM D3241
test using the CUSTOM test is important. If a test
is accidentally terminated after aerating the fuel
sample, restarting the D3241 test requires the fuel
be aerated again. However, the CUSTOM test will
recognize if an aeration has been performed
within one hour and allow the aeration data to be
used when restarting a test. Do not start the drive
pump descent. Vent the system pressure before
continuing the test where terminated. Do not
restart tests if the Tube temperature has stabilized
and the bypass valve has CLOSED (dP value is
visible). These tests have to be dismantled and re-
assembled.
This manual is used for both the Model 230 (1 ∆P)
and Model 240 (2 ∆P) JFTOT. Therefore, the
manual will make references to a second ∆P. Since
the D3241 test uses only one ∆P filter, these refer-
ences explain how to properly disable the second ∆P
system.
This instruction manual contains information, warn-
ings, and cautions that must be followed to insure
safe operation and to maintain the equipment in safe
operating condition. Use of this product in a manner
not specified may impair the protection provided by
the equipment.
Safety glasses should be worn by the operator and
anyone in the vicinity of the equipment for protection
from splashed materials. Non-flammable heat
resistant gloves as well as non-flammable clothing
should be worn when using this equipment. Tests
performed with this equipment may involve hazard-
ous materials. This instruction manual does not
purport to address all safety concerns associated with
these tests. It is the responsibility of the user of this
equipment to establish appropriate safety and health
practices and to determine applicability limitations
prior to use.
