3. GENERAL OPERATIONAL INFORMATION

NOTE - All operators must read all of Section 3
before using the JFTOT II.
3.1 COMPUTER DISPLAY SCREEN AND
KEYPAD
All operator communication with the JFTOT com-
puter is performed from the display and keypad.
When power to the instrument is turned "on," the
display will light and the MAIN Menu will appear.
Operational selections are made by pressing the
appropriate key on the keypad.
The MAIN Menu list the different operational
categories which are available to you. Keying in a
choice from this display, or any others, will bring up a
new display (with additional choices, information, or
details) or may alter a displayed value.
The display screen uses vacuum fluorescent technol-
ogy (blue-green color) and can display six lines of
forty characters each. In the main operational
screens, the top line usually displays the title of the
display. This allows the operator to know where he is
within the menu structure and what the JFTOT is
doing. Informational displays alert the operator to
conditions that requires attention. The message is
removed by pressing a key.
The keypad has 16 tactile buttons. When using the
keypad, press near the center of the key, using slow
and deliberate actions. This prevents accidental

selections from being made and prevents messages
or values from scrolling too quickly. When making a
menu selection, the display will normally change
when a key is pressed. When responding to a
message, the display does not normally change until a
key is pressed and released. As a general rule: if a
key does not seem to respond, release it; if it still
does not respond, try again. Some keys, when
pressed, may require several seconds to respond.
There are ten functions keys, F1 to F10, plus six
special keys, ENTER, TOGGLE, PRINT SCREEN,
EXIT, STEP and REFRESH. The function key(s)
are listed on the display with the specific function
available in the menu shown. Only the function
key(s) listed perform any function. Some keys will
appear and disappear as appropriate. For example, a
function key to increase ( ↑ ) a value will disappear
when the value is at its maximum limit.
The six special keys each have a general purpose use
throughout all operations. Therefore, they are seldom
shown on the display.
• ENTER = accept, continue, proceed. For example,
when viewing the SETUP screen (to setup for a
test), pressing ENTER will start the test and the
run test screen will be displayed.
• EXIT = reject, quit, abort. For example, pressing
EXIT while running a test will stop the test.
