manometer. This bias is predictable, based
on the density of mercury and the test
fuel. A factory calibrated DPT checked
against an absolute standard, such as a
dead weight tester or air/mercury manom-
eter should read about 6% higher than true
(e.g. DPT reading of 265 mmHg with a
250 mm HG differential pressure applied).
3. Thermocouple Calibration System - The
AutoCal calibration system provides for a
reliable check of the calibration of the entire
temperature indication system by utilizing the
freezing point of Water (°C), 99% pure Tin
(232°C) and pure Lead (327.5°C) as the
standards. The AutoCals consist of a special
heater tube device which has at its middle
section a small well containing the pure Tin
or Lead into which the thermocouple is
immersed. The test thermocouple is intro-
duced into the Tin or Lead after raising the
temperature above the melting point. The
cool-down temperature-time characteristic is
observed by the JFTOT, which determines
the temperature indication at which the
temperature pauses. Any difference between
this reading and the true freezing tempera-
ture is the error in the temperature measure-
ment system. This error is recorded by the
JFTOT and applied as a correction when
displaying subsequent heater tube tempera-
tures.
4. Test Time Measurement - The JFTOT
computer provides all time measurements.
The computer contains a crystal oscillator to
maintain accurate time. The time remaining
in the test is displayed in minutes and sec-
onds.
