The contact area of bus bars must be clean to
provide good electrical contact with the heater tube.
This is very important since the bus bars must deliver
about 200 Amps to heat the tube to 260°C. Before
each test, wipe the contact area with a paper tissue
that is wet with solvent. See Cleaning Bus Bar
Contacts under Routine Maintenance in the Appen-
dix.
Raise the thermocouple to the uppermost position;
this will prevent damage when installing the heater
test section. Place the heater test section between
the bus bars, making sure of proper alignment.
Connect the fuel outlet and bypass lines to the
bulkhead fittings, being sure the line O-rings are in
place. Attach the bus bar end caps using the Allen
screws, but do not tighten. If the caps have been
completely removed, check for proper mating.
Matching numbers are stamped on the inside sur-
faces of the caps and bus bar. These numbers must
match and face each other. To ensure consistent
reassembly, the caps are normally not completely
removed from their respective bus bar. Align the top

of the heater tube flush with the top of the upper

fixed bus bar, and tighten the top two Allen screws.
Raise the lower floating bus bar as far as possible
and tighten both Allen screws. (2 ∆P test only: place
the insulator around the time reactor and secure with
the spring clip, see Figure A2.2.4.)
Check the thermocouple for proper position. Raise
the top of the slide block to the scale reference line.
The thermocouple tip must be flush with the top of
the heater tube and upper fixed bus bar. If not, adjust
by loosening the socket adjustment screw and
repositioning thermocouple plug as needed. See
Thermocouple Replacement and Position Adjustment
under Routine Maintenance in the Appendix.
Insert the thermocouple into the upper end of the
heater tube and lower to the 39 mm position. The top
of the slide is the position pointer on the scale. Each
mark on the scale is 2 mm.
