REFACE
The Jet Fuel Thermal Oxidation Tester (JFTOT)
has been designed to produce an accelerated
(higher temperature) version of conditions that
might be experienced by a flowing fuel in a
typical engine system. By maintaining these
conditions under close control, the JFTOT
promotes thermal degradation of the fuel so that
deposits may form just as they might in a real
fuel system over time. Normally the JFTOT is
used as a standard quality control tool in the
refinery laboratory. However, since fuel deposi-
tion products are of great interest in fuel re-
search, the JFTOT is also an important tool in
the search for improved fuel characteristics and
quality.
This manual has been written for the new
version of the JFTOT, called the JFTOT II.
The JFTOT II is available in two models, the
230 and 240. The models are basically the
same. The primary difference is that the
JFTOT 240 is able to measure the differential
pressure (∆P) across two collecting filters
while the JFTOT 230 is only capable of
measuring ∆P across one filter. The JFTOT
240 can be used to perform the standard
quality control tests (using only one ∆P) and
research (using either one or two ∆Ps). The
JFTOT 230 is used to perform the standard
quality control tests in the refinery laboratory.
The JFTOT II (JFTOT 230/240) has had
several names. Included are UFTOT, UFTOT
230, UFTOT 240, UFTOT D-3241, JFTOT-
230, and JFTOT-240. These are all the same
JFTOT.

ABOUT THIS MANUAL
This manual is applicable to both the JFTOT 230
and JFTOT 240. Therefore, references and
displays showing a second ∆P appear. If a test is
made using only a single ∆P, the operator should
ignore all references to the second ∆P as no
information on the second ∆P will appear on the
display.
This manual consists of five major sections.
Each section can be considered a separate
manual.
