SpO
and pulse rate monitoring with Masimo and M300
2
Overview of SpO
This chapter describes SpO2 monitoring for the ICS with M300 devices configured for use with Masimo
sensors. For all other bedside monitors, refer to their respective instructions for use.
SpO2 monitoring is only possible when the SpO2 license option is enabled at the ICS, an SpO2 license is
available, and SpO2 monitoring is set to On.
NOTE
The ICS displays a message when all SpO2 licenses have been allocated.
The M300 measures the percentage of functional hemoglobin saturated with oxygen (SpO2) and derives
a pulse rate (PLS) continuously.
A sensor, applied to the patient, measures the absorption levels of red and infrared light. The SpO2
algorithm uses the difference between the two measurements to calculate the SpO2. Because light
absorption varies with blood volume and blood volume varies with pulse rate, the SpO2 algorithm can also
derive a pulse value.
The SpO2 values and waveforms display on the ICS and the M300 (pulse values display only at the ICS).
SpO2 measurements are for adult and pediatric patients.
NOTE
Information about wavelength range may be useful during photodynamic therapy. For details, refer to
"Technical specifications" on page 269.
The SpO2 monitoring functions are configurable in the parameter-specific dialog window (see "SpO
parameter setup functions" on page 179).
Before performing any monitoring functions, refer to the section "For your safety and that of your patients"
on page 7.
For parameter-specific error messages, see the chapter "Problem solving" on page 229.
